Portugal Fans Invades Downtown Brampton
Portugal Wins and Downtown Brampton Ignites
Main & Queen in a sea of Red & Green |
The game was not shown
on the big screen at Garden Square due to The African Wave festival, but that
did not deter rabid Portuguese fans from finding other alternatives to watch
their heroes play Croatia in a sudden death EuroCup 2016 match.
Fan waving their flag |
While covering the
African Wave Festival for this Blogger, and my Newspaper, I kept tabs on how
the Portugal and Croatia were doing via Twitter on my Blackberry. The game was
tight as there was not score after regulation time, then after extra time.
Garden Square was
relatively quiet, and one Portugal fan Sean Stephenson, although disappointed
at not seeing the game took full advantage of the Music from the festival to
get up and dance.
Sean Stephenson |
Well he is really
dancing now, and several hundred others who took refuge in various drinking
establishments in the downtown area, because it was like dinner bell going off.
I noticed on Twitter that Portugal had actually won the game in a shootout,
then in roughly five minutes the horns were honking, cheers rang out, and the
drums were beating, and that was definitely not on stage.
A swarm of Portuguese
fans descended upon the Main & queen Streets in droves, waving, or wearing their flags, and several
cars going north south east and west at the four corners waving the flags,
honking their horns, hanging out the windows of the cars (not the safest thing
to do in some circumstances, but the Portuguese fans although ecstatic that
their team won, did keep the celebrating under control and there was security
around to make sure nothing got out of hand. especially right at the corner of
Main and Queen on The Garden Square side, and nothing did.
Good Clean Fun |
It was just good
clean fun for a group of fans who are heavily passionate for their team.
So much for safety |
Congratulations to
Portugal and Good Luck in the Quarter-Finals.
That one should be on
the big screen.
