Bollywood/Hollywood Meet Hollywood North
What does Meatballs, Men With Brooms, Mon Oncle Antoine, Why Shoot the Teacher, The Sweater, have in common. Well they are all Canadian films, filmed produced and directed right here in Canada. And on Wednesday April 20th live at Garden Square in Brampton, The Rose Theatre and The Brampton Library paid tribute to Canadian Films, by presenting a Canadian made film called, Bollywood/Hollywood, Produced by David Hamilton, and written and directed by Deepa Mehta. The movie starred Rahul Khanna, Lisa Ray, Rishma Malik, Moushumi Chatterjee and was shot in and around the Toronto area
A showcase and celebration of Canadian Movie making was presented at Garden Square on April 20 to help celebrate Canadian National Film Day.  For David Hamilton and Deepa Mehta, Bollywood/Hollywood is one of several films they have Collaborated and with their own production company, they have produced nine films. The weather did cooperate, mind you it did get rather chilly towards the last half hour.
The event featured an old Canadian News Reel from the 1940's, and then a retrospective montage of Canadian films and T.V. shows (Corner Gas). Of course the National Anthem, then the feature film. The crowd was fine, and were treated to a very enjoyable movie. The plot consisted of two cultures colliding with one another. Something like an East Meets West type of scenario.
After the movie concluded, there was a Question & Answer session via Skype, with both David Hamilton, and Deepa Mehta, which was quite thrilling for the crowd on hand.

It would have nicer if there were more out to watch but the ones who were in attendance quite enjoyed the movie, including the ice cream, popcorn, Subway subs, The Works hamburgers, and Starbucks to help satisfied the palette. The Brampton Library also had books and information on Canadian films, plus there was the Spin-to-Win Wheel, a chance to spin the wheel and maybe win a bookmark, pen, etc.
Celebrating Canadian films should be celebrated, and I applaud The Brampton Library and The Rose Theatre to have the fortitude to present Canadian-National Film Day, because there are some very good Canadian films out there, but we are so locked into this Hollywood persona that we get sucked into their rhetoric, that Hollywood is everything in regards to movies, that sometimes we tend to forget what great talent, and wonderful stories, and I mean great stories Canada has to offer.  "Mon Oncle Antoine," directed by Claude Jutra is one prime example of a great story and movie making which I highly recommend. Although the movie is spoken in Quebecois French, anyone interested to know about life in rural Quebec or rural anywhere in Canada will relate to this movie.
Thank you to June Dickenson from the Brampton Library, and Samantha Wilson from The Rose Theatre for Celebrating our national films. Hopefully it will be back next year.

On another note in regards to Garden Square.
Talking with Samantha Wilson from The Rose Theatre, she mentioned for movie goers, There will be 2 movies for Family Saturdays, with the first one to begin at 5:00 pm, for the younger ones, then the next feature will begin at 8:00 pm, which will be more family action, for the older children. Plus Throwback Tuesday has been shifted to Thursdays. All this to begin on May 21st, as part of the long weekend.
Also for Blue Jay fans, Blue Jay should be back live on Sunday afternoons beginning in May. The Rose Theatre is attempting to secure the rights through Rogers Communications. So don't forget your lawn chair, and come on down for some great entertainment. And the Price is definitely right.
